London Games 2012 :
Tourism
The opportunity for the
marine industry, following a successful Games
in the UK, is significant. There are many fantastic opportunties
for businesses to provide accommdation during the games, while
the increased expoure the industry will enjoy will create a lasting
and postive legacy. However, it is important to temper such
enthusiasm with an appreciation for the possible
pit-falls
It is not widely understood
that Olympic events generally result in a reduction in inbound
tourism while the event is being held, immediately surrounding the
venues. Businesses need to be aware of important facts, such as
these, in order to make the most of the long-term opportunties that
games have to offer. The BMF will be issuing regular updates to
members in order to ensure the most benefit is realised for
the highest number of businesses. Some issues to conisder
include;
- Availability of event
services and materials (marquees, for example) may be limited
during the Games
- Logisitical disurption may
occur, on roads and other transport networks
- The majority of the
inbound tourisim benefits of the Games will be realised after the
event has finished
- Strict branding guidelines
will limit the ability of businesses to directly benefit from the
Games
- Domestic tourism for
businesses operating away from Olympic venues may be boosted by
those wishing to escape London during the event
- An influx of international
media provides an opportunity to promote leisure marine tourism to
a global market
- National Tourism Bodies
will be working to support tourism businesses before, during and
after the games - you can find out more about these organisations
by visiting the Games'
Directory
